Changing from Nikon to Canon, and recently watching 5d's on Ebay, i found one i really like the look of but wondered if anyone knew how to use the serial number to detect the cameras age. The serial number is: 073050xxxx.

1. I want to purchase a Canon 5D Mark 2 body. I have a serial number and would like to work out it's manufacture date. I phoned Canon UK and was told that even Canon do hold the serial numbers! I know, but i managed not to laugh. Is there any other i can trace the date or get any other info from the serial number? Sep 05, 2012 at 08:30 PM.
2. Peter Decheert, in his book 'Canon Rangefinder Cameras1933-68' estimates production at 525, although he states some records show a production of 506 cameras, while others show only 164. Serial number apparently started at 8001, and may run as high as 8700. I have seen photos of 8556, so no all numbers were used.
